Plot summary
A persistent streak of fatal accidents has left the town of Karmack needing a middle man, a person the municipality sends to tell residents of casualties. Frank Farrelli lives with his mother and has been out of work for a long time. He gets the position, and his first chance to deliver a notification in his official role arrives. Weeks pass without accidents, and Frank goes to a bar with his best friend, Steve Miller. There Bob Spencer picks a petty argument with Steve and strikes him. Steve is left with a severe traumatic brain injury and falls into a coma. The doctors say the outcome is likely to be very poor, with Steve unresponsive after the coma. Frank notifies Steve's father Martin.
