Plot summary
The Glade holds about thirty boys, none of them able to remember a life before it, and each has taken on a job that keeps the place running. Stone walls shut the clearing in, and the door in the wall opens only by day: past it lies a maze whose passages shift, searched by Runners who must return before sunset. Alby leads the group, Newt is his second, and Gally keeps order among the builders. When Thomas arrives in the rising elevator, he learns the rules, among them that only Runners may enter the maze, and he is set to digging fertilizer in the woods. Names come back to the boys after a few days; nothing else does.

- In late 2012 director Wes Ball hired creature designer Ken Barthelmey to design the Grievers. Impressed by the test design, Ball asked him to add a mechanical scorpion tail, and Barthelmey's inspirations included spiders, coconut crabs, caterpillars and piranhas.
- Blake Cooper got the part of Chuck through Twitter. Ball revealed a lot there and many kids wanted the role, so Cooper constantly bugged him until Ball told him to give his tape to the casting director, and Ball was impressed enough to cast him.
- Dylan O'Brien was initially rejected by Ball for the lead role. Ball recalled that he overlooked the actor because of his hair: "He had Teen Wolf hair and I couldn't see past that and so we were looking for our Thomas".
- On February 27, 2020, South Korean boy band BTS released their music video "On", which referenced set pieces from The Maze Runner, and the homage was noted on Twitter by Dashner, author of the source book.
