Plot summary
Branko, an old man, recalls the spring of 1944, when he was a boy held in a camp and chosen for a game the Nazis arranged to mark Adolf Hitler's birthday. The teams are an elite Nazi side and a squad of prisoners taken from the camps: men who played football before the war and men imprisoned for their politics. A former Hungarian national captain leads the prisoners, and Branko is one of his players. The prisoners' skill on the ball carries them ahead of their opponents, and they mean to win the match no matter what is done to stop them.
