Plot summary
In 1970, JB Mooney is out of work and living in Framingham, Massachusetts, with his wife Terri and their sons, Carl and Tommy, when he sets his mind on four Arthur Dove paintings held by the town's museum. He tells his mother he needs money for work, then uses the loan to pay the crew he has assembled for the robbery. Larry Duffy, the getaway driver, supplies a stolen car but backs out before the job, so JB drives Guy Hickey and Ronnie Gibson to the museum himself. Inside, Gibson pulls out a gun in front of a student and beats the security guard. The paintings are hidden in a barn.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Kelly Reichardt was inspired by the real 1972 robbery of the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts, in which two Gauguins, a Picasso and a Rembrandt were stolen; she began work on the film after reading about the heist's 50th anniversary.
- The paintings burglar JB steals are four real Arthur Dove works: Tree Forms (1932), Willow Tree (1937), Tanks & Snowbanks (1938) and Yellow, Blue-Green and Brown (1941); the film has him pass up more famous paintings held by the National Gallery of Art.
