Plot summary
Marva Collins teaches in the Chicago Public School System and is unhappy with the way its schools are run. She believes the system stops children from reaching their potential, so she asks her husband, Clarence, to help her start a school in an apartment above their home. She learns at the courthouse that anyone may start a school, but state recognition requires an application, and she decides she does not want the state telling her how to teach. Her life savings pay for the school, named Westside Preparatory, and families give only what they can.
