Plot summary
Uri leads a tribe living in a village inside the former Grey Rock National Park, where people hunt and avoid mutants called beasts, whose disease turns the infected into one of them. Savan, Uri's son, is the tribe's finest hunter and his heir; Kaleb is its finest tracker; he and his sister Miru learned to read and write from their father Jaret, who vanished while looking for survivors beyond the park. Kaleb is secretly in love with Dorel, Savan's woman. When the beasts attack, the tribe shelters in a cave. Kaleb, Savan and Dorel set out for help and meet Amal, a stranger who takes them across a river to the home he shares with Neenah and Persk and who tells them of a yellow powder that cures the infection.
