Plot summary
Will McLean returns to the Carolina Military Institute for his final year, where Lt. Col. Berrineau, his mentor, asks him to look after Tom Pearce, the first black cadet the school has admitted. Freshmen at the institute, called knobs, face brutal hazing, and Pearce and Poteete, an overweight knob, draw the attention of the Ten, a clandestine group of senior cadets that sets out to remove students it considers unfit. The Ten want Pearce to leave of his own accord, and they are prepared to use force to make it look voluntary. McLean rooms with Dante Pignetti, Mark Santoro and Tradd St. Croix, who gives McLean a key to the St. Croix family home. While his roommates join in, McLean holds back, and Lt. Gen. Bentley Durrell, the commanding officer, tells him not to be soft.
