Plot summary
Rachel and Edward, Anglo-Irish twins, live in their family's crumbling estate in rural Ireland in 1920. Every night a watery presence takes over the house and holds them to three conditions: be in bed by midnight, let no outsider cross the threshold, and never leave each other alone. A curse is said to pass through the family from one generation to the next, and Edward, who keeps to himself, will not consider going. Rachel wants the two of them to leave. When Sean, a war veteran, comes back to the village nearby, he is drawn to Rachel, and she starts to break the rules.
