Plot summary
In 1804 Transylvania, the Taoist monk Kah goes to Castle Dracula and asks the Count to restore the fading power of the Seven Golden Vampires. Dracula agrees on one condition: he will use Kah's body to leave the castle that holds him prisoner. A century later, Professor Abraham Van Helsing lectures at a Chungking university about a village preyed on by a cult of seven. His audience dismisses the tale, but Hsi Ching tells him the farmer in it was his grandfather, shows him a medallion taken from a vampire, and asks him to travel there and destroy them. Van Helsing agrees. His son Leyland joins the party, along with Hsi Ching and his siblings, all trained in kung fu, on a journey paid for by Vanessa Buren, a wealthy widow they saved from the tongs.

- Shaw Brothers were unhappy with how Roy Ward Baker was directing the film, so they had their own studio director choreograph the martial arts and set up a second unit run by Chang Cheh, whose added scenes made the Eastern version run 110 minutes.
- An early edit made under Michael Carreras' guidance eliminated Count Dracula, played by John Forbes-Robertson, from the film entirely, but Carreras decided it was too short and had the character put back in.
- Continuity supervisor Renee Glynee said working with Shaw Brothers Studios was a big experience because of language differences, and that Roy Ward Baker screamed at the Chinese actors to stop spitting on set.
- Dracula's ability to assume another person's appearance was an idea removed from Houghton's script for The Satanic Rites of Dracula and reused in this film.
