Plot summary
The Great Valley turns to bare ground under a swarm of leaf-gobblers, and the herds must find somewhere else to live until the green returns. Days of searching through empty country bring arguments about the route, and the grownups decide each herd will go its own way. Rather than be split up, Littlefoot leads Cera, Ducky, Petrie and Spike away in the night, leaving a trail for their families to follow. They reach the Big Water and spot a green island joined to the shore by a land bridge. An earthshake shakes the ground as they cross, and the wave it raises destroys the bridge behind them. Cera's attempt to paddle home on a log is cut short when a swimming Sharptooth drives them back to the island's shore.
