Plot summary
In 1956, with the Hungarian uprising being crushed, a group of Westerners is stranded at Budapest Airport and driven by bus toward the frontier with neutral Austria, intending to go on to Vienna. Soviet troops and Hungarian insurgents block the roads, and the trip becomes a series of diversions. At a small lakeside town near the border, Major Surov, the local Soviet commander, removes the passengers from the bus, questions them, impounds their passports and orders them to stay in the town's only hotel. Among them are Lady Ashmore, an aristocratic Englishwoman, and a sick man who calls himself Flemyng and says he is English. Surov speaks good English, which he says he learned in Canada, and argues to the trapped passengers that Russians are human too; his attention settles on Lady Ashmore.

- While The Journey was shooting in Vienna in 1958, Deborah Kerr and Yul Brynner were the subject of love-affair rumors; Kerr ended the gossip by marrying playwright and Journey screenwriter Peter Viertel in 1960, with Brynner as one of the witnesses.
- Ron Howard had already appeared unbilled in the 1956 film Frontier Woman, but The Journey gave him his first credited screen appearance, and he was billed under the name Ronny Howard.
