Plot summary
Drew Tate is sixteen and lives in upstate New York with his parents, Kenny and Brenda, who worry that he is emotionally disturbed. His closest companion is a doll he calls Iago, and they also fear the garage fire he set by accident. In the summer of 1976 the family spends two weeks on Martha's Vineyard with wealthy relatives, Aunt Frances and her husband Spencer Phillips. The Phillipses are conservatives, and Kenny, once a Black Panther, argues furiously with Spencer about race. On the island Drew joins the party-loving Black society that gathers at the Inkwell, a beach there. He pursues Lauren Kelly, who is snooty, and befriends Heather Lee, whose husband Harold is unfaithful.
