Plot summary
Marcos, a man in his thirties with little to set him apart, gets out of Mexico City when an epidemic of the undead takes hold there and spreads across the world, and he makes a life for himself in the remote hill country. He throws in with Renato, with Claudia, a young mother, and with Zoe, Claudia's young daughter. To stay alive the four of them keep to a few plain habits: they leave no trace of themselves, make no sound and carry no smell. The creatures hunt by sound and smell, so any slip draws them. As the population of the city shrinks, the undead range farther out for food, and the hills are not as distant as they once were.
