Plot summary
To get a secluded cottage ready for sale, its owner Néstor has asked Laura and Wilson, her father, to repair it, and the two plan to spend the night there and start the work in the morning. Néstor warns them that the upper floor is unstable and unsafe to walk on. The windows are nailed shut, so the interior stays dark even during the day, and lanterns, candles and a Polaroid camera are the only light. The story is said to draw on events in a small Uruguayan village in the 1940s. Laura turns off a radio that is playing a melody. Then a sound comes from outside, and it grows louder upstairs. Wilson goes up to find out what it is, leaving Laura alone below.
