Plot summary
Giuseppe Garibaldi leaves Quarto in 1860 at the head of the Thousand, the young idealists who have come from every region of Italy, together with a group of officers loyal to him. The campaign is an episode in the unification of Italy. Among those officers stands a new figure, the Sicilian colonel Vincenzo Giordano Orsini. The expedition reaches Sicily and lands at Marsala, where the volunteers begin fighting the Bourbon army. Its numerical superiority is evident at once. The Bourbons hold the way to Palermo, and breaching their defense looks nearly impossible, so the general is almost forced to retreat. He then works out an ingenious plan.
