Plot summary
Music fills the Venetian convent school for orphan girls where Teresa lives in the late 18th century. In a storeroom she comes across a piano-forte. She and four other girls at the school form a group and play it, sharing the instrument by turns and measuring each turn with an hourglass. Lucia, one of the five, dislikes Teresa. Perlina, who directs the school, is preparing a piece for the arrival of the new Pope and is getting nowhere with it. Lucia offers a composition of her own, and Perlina turns it down. News arrives from the parents of Lucia's intended husband that the marriage will not go ahead.
