- Production designer Jean-Baptiste Tard had $600,000 of the film's $4.5 million budget to build the 221B Baker Street set and a facade for Baskerville Hall, with most of the money going on elaborate sets.
- The film's "hound" was played by a trained German Shepherd, which was augmented on screen with contact lenses and computer-generated imagery.
- The production used the streets of Old Montreal to mimic Holmes' Baker Street, and the nearby rural town of Harrington, Quebec stood in for the English moors near Baskerville Hall.
- Neither Matt Frewer nor Kenneth Welsh had read Conan Doyle's original story, and they were cast as Holmes and Watson because of their previous theater training.
