Plot summary

Lisa Monroe returns to a police detective's job in Milford, recruited by Joe O'Conner, a childhood friend who is now a lieutenant. The first case she leads is the death of her grandmother, Louise Dexter. The autopsy calls it accidental, but Lisa finds evidence pointing to Jake Mitchell. Fifteen years earlier Mitchell was convicted of the rape and murder of Jenny Rand, Lisa's best friend. The four witnesses against him were Louise, Sergeant Stuart Kling, the security guard Vinnie DiCampo, and Lisa. Mitchell has been paroled and lives in Milford again, and at his trial he promised revenge on all four. Each of them, Lisa most of all, carries guilt for not intervening when Jenny was harmed. Lisa intends to stop Mitchell, though the evidence against him is circumstantial.
