Plot summary
In Kerala during the 1940s and 1950s, work at the Mattancherry harbor in Kochi is handed out through a system called chappa. Laborers gather before dawn outside an employer's house, and metal tokens are thrown into the crowd; the men who seize one are hired for the day at the warehouses and docks. Moidu and his brother come down on opposite sides of that system: one becomes the head of a gang of thugs working for an employer, the other an activist for the workers. Organizers who call the workers together are met with force, and the labor force is set against itself. Their mother and sister go hungry at home, while violence and drink spread through the community.
