Plot summary
In the remote town of Squahamish, Ellie Chu handles most of her widowed father's station master and signalman duties, earning extra money by writing essays for classmates. She is socially ostracized and is secretly drawn to Aster Flores, the minister's daughter, who is reluctantly dating Trig, a popular boy from a wealthy family. Paul Munsky, who lives next door and plays on the football team, speaks clumsily and is part of his family's sausage business; he asks Ellie to ghostwrite a love letter to Aster. She agrees to help pay the family's bills, and, posing as Paul, starts a correspondence with Aster about art and literature. Ellie's English teacher, struck by the essays she has ghostwritten, urges her to apply to Grinnell College, though Ellie means to stay in Squahamish near her father.
