Plot summary
Jim Tahna narrates his contempt for society and for the people who employ him, though he likes the solitude his job as a security guard allows. His time off goes to dark tourism, visiting sites connected with murder. His current subject is the mass murderer and arsonist Carl Marznap, so Jim leaves Yonkers, New York, for Carl's home in California. Iris, the woman in the next room at his cheap motel, is a prostitute, and Jim is uneasy talking with her. At a restaurant he gets to know Betsy, a friendly waitress. He gives his name as Carl and tells her his sister has cancer. Betsy invites him to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, and on his tours of Marznap's house and crime scenes Jim is troubled by hallucinations and vague flashbacks.
