Plot summary
Robert Carmichael, an introverted middle-class teenager and a skilled cello player, is bored by his life in Newhaven, the coastal town where he lives, in the days before the Iraq War. He begins keeping company with Joe and Ben, two unsavory teenagers in the town. Joe's cousin Larry Haydn comes back to Newhaven after a prison term for aggravated assault and drug possession, re-enters the drug trade, and pushes the younger boys into selling for him. Bored, troubled and shut out, the boys have no grasp of moral limits, and Robert is soon using hard drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy.

The film's final scene, a brutal rape depiction, caused mass walkouts at its 2005 Cannes Film Festival premiere, and the Edinburgh Film Festival audience responded just as negatively.- In a post-screening Q&A, director Thomas Clay and co-screenwriter Joseph Lang defended the film's graphic violence, insisting they wanted to evoke how rape is used as a weapon in the wars of Bosnia and Iraq.
