- Director Kim Kwang-sik had to read at least 100 publications in Japan and China to research the 645 CE siege of Ansi Fortress, because sources about the battle in Korea were very limited.
- The production built a replica of the Ansi Fortress as a filming set; it measured 11 m high and 180 m long.
- Most Korean historical films and dramas cast older actors as generals, but Kim Kwang-sik chose relatively young actors, thinking they could realistically fight in the battle scenes.
- Kim Kwang-sik used special equipment, including a 4K camera, a Phantom camera and a robotic arm, to capture the fighting scenes in slow motion.
