Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Golf Specialist (1930)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- In 1929 W. C. Fields tried to claim the film rights to his old stage sketch "The Family Ford" and found it had already been filmed without permission; to avoid a repeat, he teamed with producer Lou Brock to film another sketch, "An Episode on the Links," as a talking picture.
- Although the short turned out well, it won W. C. Fields no further film work; he left New York for Hollywood, where his insistence on his high Broadway salary priced him out of jobs until four Mack Sennett comedies led to feature films at Paramount and then Universal.
- The golf sketch in The Golf Specialist was staged entirely indoors, using an imitation-grass carpet and a "lakeside" backdrop.
- The golf sketch ran only 10 to 12 minutes on stage with four performers, so extra scenes were added on a hotel-lobby set to stretch the film to two reels, about 20 minutes.
- Harriet MacGibbon, then a 24-year-old stage actress, made her first film appearance in The Golf Specialist, three decades before she became Mrs. Drysdale on The Beverly Hillbillies.
