Jeannette Walls and her brother and sisters grow up moving from town to town with their parents, Rex and Rose Mary, living in poverty. Rose Mary paints and has no intention of raising a family. After Jeannette is badly burned while cooking unsupervised, a doctor and a social worker at the hospital question her home life, and Rex talks his way past the staff and takes her away.
