Plot summary
Michael Green has built a successful men's magazine and left his novel unfinished. He dates many women without settling on one, among them his secretary Sylvia. On the night he turns forty he comes home alone and drunk. A young woman appears at his door in a bikini and white go-go boots, wrapped in a green bow. She gives her name as Sandy Brown and says his colleague Harold arranged her as a gift for the evening. She faints from hunger in his kitchen. When she comes to, she admits she is really Sandy Benson, twenty-one, from Kenosha, Wisconsin, an archaeology graduate who moved to Los Angeles after a breakup and has never done anything of the sort. The two talk until morning, with nothing physical between them.

- Screenwriter Susan Silver drew on her own life for the script: like Sandy, she moved from Wisconsin to Los Angeles to become a writer, and the film's 'love ya' versus 'I Love You' dialogue came from her real experience with her boyfriend Arthur Silver, whom she later married.
- Karen Valentine thought the role of Sandy could help her break free of her image. She said she was playing the romantic lead, a 22-year-old girl having an affair with a man of 39, unlike Alice Johnson, whom she played for five years.
