Plot summary
Their father's lawyer writes to Veronica, Victoria, and Elizabeth. The will can be read only after all three have spent three nights at his house, which stands on an isolated island. Each sister brings her husband. Martha and Ruth, the maids, are at the house to receive them, and so is Colin, a hunchback. Colin carries luggage, grows angry, then catches a rabbit and eats it alive. The remains of the rabbit turn up in one of the beds, with a note about the meek inheriting. Blood is used to paint a large X on a bedroom door, and some of the party go downstairs to see about it.
