Joan Tetzel
Biography
Joan Tetzel was an American actress whose career took in radio, film, television and the stage. Born in New York City and raised in the Bronx, she made her acting debut at 13 on a children's radio program. She was under contract to David O. Selznick from 1942, and her film debut came in Duel in the Sun (1946). She appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's The Paradine Case (1947) as Judy Flaquer, and in The File on Thelma Jordon (1949); her other films included Hell Below Zero and Joy in the Morning. On television she worked on Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Perry Mason, Thriller and Gunsmoke. Her stage debut came at the Longacre Theatre in New York City in Lorelei, and she later appeared in the first staging of I Remember Mama and as Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest on Broadway. She died in 1977.

In 1942, Tetzel put her name on a contract with David O. Selznick. Her stage programs noted that she appeared through his courtesy, a line meant to keep casting agents and talent scouts away.
First role
Tetzel made her first stage appearance in Lorelei at New York City's Longacre Theatre in 1938. She went on to play Nurse Ratched in the Broadway staging of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
