Plot summary
Hazel Grace Lancaster is a teenager in Indianapolis with cancer in her lungs, and she carries an oxygen tank. Her mother thinks she is depressed, so Hazel goes to a support group for cancer patients at a church. There she meets Augustus Waters, called Gus, a boy in remission after bone cancer took half of a leg; he has come with his friend Isaac, who has eye cancer. Hazel and Gus swap their favorite books. She lends him An Imperial Affliction, a novel about a girl named Anna that stops in the middle, and he lends her one tied to his favorite video game. Hazel has sent many letters to the book's author, Peter Van Houten, and heard nothing back. Gus locates the author's assistant, Lidewij, and learns Van Houten will answer their questions only in person.

- Josh Boone read close to 150 actresses for Hazel and watched about 50 of them audition, but said he knew within ten or fifteen seconds of Shailene Woodley's audition that she was the part.
- The Anne Frank House interiors were not shot in Amsterdam at all. Production designer Molly Hughes and art director Greg Weimerskirch built three sets, one for each floor, at Pittsburgh Studios in Churchill, Pennsylvania.
- Indianapolis's Funky Bones sculpture, where Hazel and Gus picnic, was rebuilt in Pittsburgh with the help of the Dutch artist who made the original, Joep van Lieshout.
- John Green filmed a cameo as the father of a girl who asks about Hazel's cannula at the airport, but the scene was cut and survives only on the disc releases. Green said it went "because it was totally unnecessary to the movie-slash-I was terrible".
- Charli XCX's "Boom Clap", one of the film's main songs, grew into an international hit thanks in part to the exposure the film gave it.
