Plot summary
Margaret Selfridge lives with her father, Simon, and her Aunt Abigail in a mansion in New York City. She loves Garry Holmes, an honest man from a modest background, and marries him without telling her family. Simon, who considers Garry unworthy of her, sends Margaret away so that she will forget him, unaware that the two are husband and wife. She gives birth to a daughter, Peggy, and after some months brings the baby back to the family manor, where the homecoming causes a scene. In the city, Garry finds a small girl crying alone outside a fruit stand. He does not know she is his daughter; he brings her to the police station and leaves his dog to watch over her.
