Plot summary
A string of murders in Paris in 1880 is blamed on a wolf man, and the Brisson Bank is robbed when an employee named Michel is stabbed. Lucien Cortier, a clerk at the bank, heard a wolf's howl before he came upon Michel, whose dying words told of a face at the window. Inspector Gouffert does not believe the account. Lucien wants the money recovered and the killer found, and he loves Cecile de Brisson, the owner's daughter, whose father would never accept a match across their social standing. Facing ruin after earlier losses, M. de Brisson wants the Chevalier del Gardo's money, and the Chevalier will invest only if he may court Cecile, whom he loves. M. de Brisson leaves the decision to his daughter.
