Plot summary
Colonel MacKenzie Casey, a Marine officer assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, comes upon what looks like a scheme by General R. Pendleton Lloyd, who chairs the joint chiefs, and Defense Secretary Charles Potter to push President William Foster out of the White House and put Vice President Walter Kelly in his place, on the belief that Kelly would do their bidding. Casey takes the matter to Betsy Corcoran, an old acquaintance who serves as Foster's chief of staff, and through her reaches the president. Only days remain before the plan is carried out, and the two of them hunt for the evidence that could stop it.
