Plot summary
In a bucolic area called The Kingdom, dotted with waterholes, Athena, the 50-year-old mother elephant at the head of a herd of adult females and juveniles of both sexes, lives with the mother Mala, her older daughter Milli and the newborn Mimi. Bullfrogs, chameleons, dung beetles, killifish and terrapins share the waterholes. When drought drives the herd out of The Kingdom, the elephants must cover 200 miles of savanna to reach the next water, eating and drinking plenty along the way. Athena faces a hard choice: wait until Mimi grows stronger for the journey, or move on for the safety of the herd.
