Plot summary
In Saint Petersburg in 1860, the retired officer Yakovlev lives by the duels of the nobility, work he took up after a long exile. Under Russian law a duelist could be replaced by another man, and through his associate Baron Staroe he is hired to fight in the place of others. He is a deadly shot, and his noble opponents are wounded or killed. Duels of honor are against the law, yet the practice is widely tolerated, and those who take part accept that their fate rests in God's hands. Yakovlev meets the young Prince Tuchkov and the prince's sister, Princess Martha, and feelings he had not expected stir in him.
