Plot summary
Matthew is a shy American who arrives in Paris in 1968 to spend a year studying French. At the Cinémathèque Française, where crowds have gathered to protest the dismissal of its director, Henri Langlois, he falls in with Théo and Isabelle, twins whose mother is English and whose father is a French poet. The three of them talk about film constantly. After dinner at the family apartment, the twins ask Matthew to move in with them during the month their parents will be away, and he agrees, glad to have found French friends at last. Under that roof the twins' closeness and their easy attitude toward nudity and sex pull Matthew into a triangle while the May riots gather force in the streets.

- Actor Eva Green said her agent and her own parents begged her not to take the role of Isabelle, fearing the film's explicit nudity and sex scenes would define her career the way similar material had defined actor Maria Schneider's.
- Jake Gyllenhaal screen-tested opposite Eva Green for the male lead but withdrew because of concerns about the film's nudity, and Michael Pitt was cast in the role instead.
- During pre-production Bertolucci peppered the narrative with clips from films he loves and dropped the source novel's homosexual content, including scenes showing Matthew and Théo having sex, which he felt was just too much.
- When Eva Green first watched a rough cut of the film, she said she was quite shocked by it and had to look away during the sex scenes.
