Plot summary
Anne lives with her mother-in-law Morwen, and the two women get by on the edges of late-medieval society while Anne's husband Seamus is away fighting in the Wars of the Roses. Anne is devout and gentle, Morwen a crude grifter set on survival. Seamus's childhood friend Jago comes home from the war and says the two men deserted and that thieves killed Seamus. Morwen doubts him, though his account matches a dream Anne had of her husband's death. Anne starts seeing an armored knight in the woods.
