Plot summary
Isabella Rossi's mother, Maria, killed three clergy members during an exorcism, and her father told her what had happened and died three days later. Maria was not convicted, ruled insane, and has been held in a Catholic psychiatric hospital in Rome since. Twenty years on, Isabella comes to the city with filmmaker Michael Schaefer to shoot a documentary about exorcisms and learn what became of her mother. There she meets Fathers Ben Rawlings and David Keane, priests who perform the rite without the Vatican's permission, and she visits Maria, who screams in a language Isabella cannot identify. The priests take her along to a ritual they have not been authorized to perform.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Devil Inside (2012)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Devil Inside began in 2005 when Matthew Peterman read about the Catholic Church's school of exorcism and brought the idea to William Brent Bell; the pair co-wrote a traditional script but, frustrated with it, rewrote it as found footage after producer Morris Paulson's suggestion.
- Audiences booed and demanded refunds from Paramount, feeling they had paid admission to an incomplete film whose ending title card sent them to a website; William Brent Bell said the title card directing viewers to a website was added by Paramount, not the filmmakers.
- The film's commercial success despite its negative critical and audience reaction made it one of several that led studios to reconsider confining horror films to the dump months and Halloween season.
