Plot summary
Dr. Paul Carruthers is a chemist and physician in Heathville. His employers, Mary Heath and Henry Morton, offer him five thousand dollars for his contributions to the company and argue that he took a buyout early on instead of keeping his partnership stake. Carruthers wants revenge. He enlarges ordinary bats into massive creatures and trains them to come when they smell a sharp aftershave he has made, then passes the lotion to his enemies as a sample. A reporter from the Chicago Register, Johnny Layton, is sent with his photographer 'One-Shot' McGuire to cover the attacks and untangle the mystery.
