Plot summary
The Den is a social media site, and Elizabeth Benton uses it to gather data for her sociology thesis, counting how many of her conversations with strangers become meaningful. Her friend Sally, on the graduate board, helps her secure a grant, and she spends months chatting. Her boyfriend Damien and her friends Jenni and Max have their doubts, but most conversations end quickly and she collects plenty of material. Then her account is hacked, her webcam activates on its own, and a hostile stranger keeps trying to reach her. One night she watches a masked man kill a young woman live on the site. The police dismiss it as a hoax, and Max fails to trace the hacker through proxy servers.
