Plot summary
The last evacuation flight out of Africa goes down off the West African coast, and Brian Murphy, an Air Force engineer, is the only one who survives the crash. Zombies attacked villages in the area the night before, so he salvages what he can from the wreck and repairs a broken-down truck he finds in a village. The truck sinks into a pothole as the dead close in, and Daniel Dembele, a local soldier who has left his unit, pulls him free. Daniel's wife was killed in the attacks, and a military unit heading north took his son to a base. Daniel offers to show Brian the way to the nearest airport, asking for the truck in return so he can go after his son. At the airport the tower radio brings no response.
