Plot summary
Russia, May 1942. At a small anti-aircraft outpost far behind the front lines, a veteran sergeant major, Fedot Vaskov, has lost patience with his rowdy, undisciplined soldiers, and they are taken off his hands. The replacements who arrive are young women with little training: Rita Osyanina, Zhenya Komelkova, Sonya Gurvich, Liza Brichkina and Galya Chetvertak. Soon afterward, German saboteurs parachute into the area, sent to destroy a vital railway link. The outpost, with its two anti-aircraft guns, is all that stands between them and the railway. Vaskov takes five of the women with him into the woods to intercept them.
