Plot summary
Maris and his brother live in a tiny village in a Baltic state under Nazi occupation. The villagers take him for a fool. When the Germans come recruiting, he is enlisted along with his brother and a handful of other men from the village, and a rifle is put in his hands. The company is quartered in a monastery, and Maris reads his own fate as a religious calling rather than a war. The conduct of the soldiers around him opens his eyes, and the young woman caught up in it becomes the one he sets out to save.
