Plot summary
Emily Barker needs money, so she takes work cleaning the East Falls Museum at night, where the haunted doll Robert has been put on display. Whispers in empty rooms and handprints she cannot account for mark her shifts. She gets to know Kevin, one of the guards, and Ethel, the head cleaner. Kevin and Emily talk about their plans: Kevin dreams of becoming a photographer, and Emily is back at university, working out what to do with her life. Emily takes her worries to Walter Berenson, the museum's owner, and to the head of security, but neither acts on them. She comes to believe the doll itself is moving around the building after hours.
