Plot summary
Sugar Torch, a stripper headlining a burlesque show in Los Angeles, is ambushed in her dressing room by a gunman and runs into the street, where she is fatally wounded. Detectives Joe Kojaku and Charlie Bancroft, partners who share an apartment, take the case. In the dressing room they find a portrait of Sugar in a kimono, dressed as a geisha for a Japanese-themed act she was preparing. The two hunt for the man who had been helping her develop that act. They question the student artist Chris, who draws his likeness for them. With her help they find Hansel, who painted the portrait, and Roma, a wigmaker who was to supply the wig. Charlie is drawn to Chris.
