Plot summary
Anthony, who is eight, is uneasy about the weekend he is about to spend with his father. Bonnie, his mother, and her new husband Kyle are away at a Catholic retreat, and the boy is left with Walt, a carpenter whose drinking ended the marriage. Walt has doubts of his own about the visit. He is trying to stay sober and to find work that would pay off his debts. On their first day together his truck will not start, his landlord shuts him out of the house, and the toolbox he needs for an upcoming job is taken. Those tools came to Walt from his own father. Anthony, meanwhile, has his own religious rite of passage to prepare for.
