Plot summary
Sam Shakusky, twelve, is an orphan spending the summer of 1965 at Camp Ivanhoe, the Khaki Scout camp on New Penzance Island off the New England coast. Suzy Bishop, also twelve, lives across the island with her parents, both lawyers, and her three younger brothers. They met the summer before at a church performance, became pen pals, and now have a secret pact to run away together. Sam leaves a note resigning from the scouts and slips away; Suzy packs supplies and leaves her house. Scout Master Randy Ward learns of Sam's absence and sends his troop out to search, while Captain Duffy Sharp of the island police contacts the Billingsleys, Sam's current foster parents.

- Wes Anderson left the kissing scene between the two 12-year-old leads unrehearsed so it would feel spontaneous, and it turned out to be the first kiss, on screen or off, for both young actors Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward. Hayward was later given the cat from the film as a personal pet once shooting wrapped.
- Because Anderson felt there was 'no movie' without the right child leads, the production spent eight months auditioning children at different schools before casting newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward as Sam and Suzy.
