Plot summary
Francis, Peter and Jack Whitman have not seen one another since their father's funeral a year ago. Now they board the Darjeeling Limited, and Francis, the eldest, whose head is bandaged after a motorcycle accident, has planned a journey of spiritual self-discovery. He carries a strict itinerary prepared by his assistant, Brendan, and confiscates his brothers' passports so they cannot leave the train early. Their luggage is marked with their father's initials, and they carry other belongings that were his. The train crosses the Indian countryside and stops at Hindu and Sikh temples. Peter and Jack grow angry at Francis's controlling behavior, and the chief steward has been annoyed by them throughout the journey.

- Wes Anderson has said that it was Satyajit Ray's movies that made him want to come to India. The soundtrack borrows "Charu's Theme" from Ray's 1964 film Charulata, alongside film-score cues by Shankar Jaikishan and classic works by Debussy and Beethoven.
- The film ends with the 1969 song "Les Champs-Élysées" by the French singer Joe Dassin, who was the son of the blacklisted American director Jules Dassin.
- Much of the film was shot in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. The scenes representing the Himalayas were filmed in Udaipur, while the opening sequence was shot on the streets of Jodhpur.
- The Darjeeling Limited made its world premiere on 3 September 2007 at the Venice Film Festival, where it was in competition for the Golden Lion and won the Little Golden Lion.
- The film was held back to just two theaters on opening weekend, where it grossed $134,938, an average of $67,469 for each theater.
