Plot summary
Spring 1974. Max Barber's latest picture has flopped, leaving him deep in debt to the mobster Reggie Fontaine. The rival producer James Moore offers to buy the rights to Max's script Paradise for $1 million, enough to settle the debt. Max agrees, then changes his mind after he happens to witness the death of the movie star Frank Pierce; Moore collects $5 million in insurance on him. Max sees a way to pay off Reggie and keep Paradise: make a film, insure it, and kill off its lead. He finds Duke Montana, a suicidal western star, in a nursing home, and with his nephew Walter Creason talks him into taking the part.
