Plot summary
François Pignon is a divorced accountant at a rubber factory, a quiet man whose teenage son ignores him. When he learns he is about to be downsized, he considers jumping from his balcony, and Belone, the neighbor who has just moved in, talks him out of it. Belone once worked as an industrial psychologist, and he has a scheme: photographs of Pignon with a man in a bar, mailed anonymously to the factory's chief executive, Kopel. The factory makes condoms, so gay customers matter, and firing Pignon could look like bigotry. Pignon alters nothing about his mild manner, yet his co-workers begin to see him in a new light; Félix Santini, the personnel director, is warned that further harassment could cost him his job.
