Plot summary
George Hogg, a journalist, enters Nanjing in 1938 disguised as a Red Cross aid worker and photographs what he finds on the streets and later at an execution of refugees. The Japanese capture him, and a Chinese communist resistance fighter, Chen Hansheng, pulls him free in a firefight that leaves Hogg wounded. Nurse Lee Pearson treats him in a rebel camp, and Hansheng, on her suggestion, sends him to rest at an orphanage holding 56 boys looked after by an aged grandmother. The boys attack him with sticks on his first night; Lee, who brings the orphanage supplies, intervenes. She asks Hogg to take charge of the boys while she leaves for two months, and the store of rice is nearly gone.

- James MacManus, the film's original writer, said George Hogg's entry to China was in February 1938 and that Hogg did not go to Nanjing: "The movie has been dramatized. It's not the fact." No articles of Hogg witnessing atrocities were found in the Associated Press or United Press International archives.
- The film was criticized for ignoring Rewi Alley, a Communist New Zealander celebrated in China's revolution, and for converting the nurse played by Radha Mitchell from a New Zealander to an American.
